30 Greatest Teams in Premier League History
17. Chelsea, 2014-15
Starting XI: T. Courtois; B. Ivanovic, G. Cahill, J. Terry, C. Azpilicueta; C. Fabregas, N. Matic; Willian, Oscar, E. Hazard; D. Costa.
You shouldn’t need my help remembering this team – it’s less than a year since they coasted to a third Premier League title under Jose Mourinho.
Having finished 3rd the season before, the Special One was focused and ruthless in bringing in the two key signings that would prove to decide the title: Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa. Though essentially built on defensive solidity via their excellent back four, Chelsea were exhilarating during the first half of the season, blowing teams away with their attacking ability and prompting whispers of an unbeaten season before finally losing to Newcastle on Matchday 15. Fabregas’ assists and Costa’s goals were decisive, but it was the all-around play of Eden Hazard that was particularly telling. The diminutive Belgian scooped several player of the year awards and regularly won games almost single-handedly.
Perhaps they would rank higher had they not limped to the finish line in the spring, and proceeded to self-destruct completely in late-2015. Nonetheless, this was a supremely well-balanced team, with a perfect mixture of power and finesse throughout.
