Starting XI: B. Gunn (GK); I. Culverhouse, I. Butterworth, J. Polston, M. Bowen; R. Fox, I. Crook, J. Goss, D. Phillips; M. Robins, C. Sutton.

Norwich had finished the previous season – the final season of the old First Division – in 18th place and, rather than capitalise on avoiding relegation, they chose to sell star striker Robert Fleck to Chelsea. A unanimous favourite for relegation again, they instead flew out of the blocks, losing just one of their first ten games and topping the league table until a slump over the Christmas period saw them fall away from what would have been a captivating title challenge. But for their winter form, and a disastrous April during which they lost four of the five games they played, they could have made a genuine push for the title.

Cult hero Jeremy Goss was the heart and soul of the midfield, while winger David Phillips and striker Mark Robins combined for 25 goals. But in reality, this was a team of decent professionals whose synergy allowed them to outperform their expectations. Two seasons later, Norwich finished rock bottom and were relegated from the Premier League. The 1992-93 season would also see the emergence of a feisty young forward named Chris Sutton – more on him later.
