Leicester City is benefitting greatly from the signing of centre back Robert Huth

Former Tottenham manager has identified Leicester’s key transfer signing and his identity might certainly surprise you. Most would highlight Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez or N’Golo Kante has the Foxes most influential signing as of late, but Redknapp believes that honor goes to former Stoke defender Robert Huth.

More from Leicester City

Redknapp revealed his admiration for Huth in his latest column for the Telegraph. The German defender has been a stalwart for Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri who has started him in 26 Premier League matches for the club this season. He might not be the most skilled defender in the Premier League, but he is one of the most consistent.

His pairing with fellow unsung hero Wes Morgan has been a huge reason for Leicester’s Ascension to the top of the Premier League table. The headlines typically go to the likes of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez, but Leicester’s defense deserves as the very least an honorable mention for the team’s success.

After all, the Foxes typically give up possession in an effort to launch their prolific counter attack against their opponents. That means that Leicester has to be solid in defense for long stretches. Staying solid for that length of time requires a high level of competence in the team’s back four.

Huth might be the very definition of competent. He won’t wow you with anything he does out on the pitch, but he’s rarely put a foot wrong for the Premier League leaders. His physical presence has been a huge help for keeper Kasper Schmeichel and the rest of the Fox defense.

I’m a fan of the hulking German, but Redknapp might be getting a little too carried away with his admiration for the centre back. He’s been really good for Leicester this season, but he’s not in the class of midfielder N’Golo Kante if you’re inclined to ignore the team’s high-flying offense.

With that being said, Huth is still deserving of a ton of credit. He only cost Leicester a reported three million pounds, and he’s been a rock for them all season long. The club doesn’t ask him to do anything out of his limited skill set, but he does his job every week. He could do a solid job for a lot of Premier League clubs.

Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and the rest of the Leicester attack rightly get most of the attention, but Robert Huth and the Foxes defense deserve a little more attention than they’ve received so far.
