Pressure is mounting for Club America and their manager
Clausura 2016 started with so much promise, but now the winds are shifting and there’s tension building in Azteca Stadium.
Club America, one of Mexico’s prized soccer franchises has become the epicenter for angst among fans and players. Since Apertura 2012, America has been eliminated in the quarterfinals three times, ousted in the semis once and participated in the finals three times, winning twice. The history is successful, but now in Clausura 16′ they’ve fallen on hard times and all eyes are on head coach Nacho Ambriz.
Right now, America sits in 6th place in Liga MX with a 3-3-2 record. The wins and ties haven’t been the problem per say, but their recent losses have been glaring:
- 4-1 vs. Pachuca
- 4-1 vs. Tigres
- 3-0 vs Pumas (December Liguilla)
Las Aguilas are full of talented players with a potent attack that would make any team rethink their tactics on the defensive side of the ball.
But, then again, the inconsistency on the back line with Goltz, Alvarado, Aguilar, Samudio and a host of others have caused America fans frustration in a big way.
Those problems on the field seem to be manifesting themselves in a much larger way between players and the coaching staff. The discord has fallen on the shoulders of Ambriz. His record with America, 18-6-12 isn’t necessarily the problem, it’s the lack of discipline that continues to plague America in the biggest of matches. Take, for example, two red cards accumulated by Oribe Peralta and Darwin Quintero. America’s two prime attackers lose sight of the bigger picture and find themselves in a reckless situation and heading to the locker room.

Although the players are accountable for their actions on the field, it is rather concerning that under Nacho Ambriz’s leadership, Las Aguilas have recorded the same amount of red cards (13) in less than a year than the 13 tallied in 88 games under Miguel Herrera. This, as reported by Jose de Jesus of Vavel Mexico.
Ambriz is no stranger to the pressures of being the leader, in January he faced the media amid rumors of his job security.
“Since I arrived I have always been questioned, if I should be or not be here, but I feel very calm, enjoying being the coach of America and that’s how I feel and what I’m living right now,” said Ambriz.
