Unwillingness to spend

After the Emirates stadium was built and paid off, Arsenal finally had some money to throw around in the transfer market. They spent nearly £80 million combined on Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil and have spent decent money on Danny Welbeck and Santi Cazorla.

The issue is not just that Wenger is not willing to spend on players here and there, but that he and the club refuse to spend when it is most needed and where it is most needed. They infamously did not bring in a single outfield player in the summer window was a sign of arrogance on behalf of the manager and naiveté on behalf of the club.

Taking a look at the club’s recent buys and they all follow a similar pattern, they are either defenders or attacking players. Ever since Patrick Vieira departed the club, the general consensus has been that Arsenal needed to find some steel in midfield.

Francis Coquelin is developing in to a possible fill-in for the role and Mohamed Elneny was brought in during the winter window, but they are both a bit late to the party. Instead of buying defensive midfielders as it was so obvious they needed to, the club focused on flair players instead and they have had little to show for it.
