Chelsea crashing out of the Champions League at the hands of PSG felt like the cold ending of an era at Stamford Bridge

Rational fans didn’t expect for Chelsea to defeat PSG in their Champions League tie, but most expected the Blues to give the French giants a better game. Instead, Guus Hiddink’s team crashed out of Europe’s most prestigious competition with a whimper.

It’s dangerous to draw too many conclusions from one match, but this had the feel of something bigger than one game for Chelsea. It really felt like the end of any influence Jose Mourinho had at the club. It truly felt like the end of an era.

Even Hiddink alluded to that feeling when he commented that the club must now enter a “transition period” without Champions League football next season. With the top four thoroughly out of sight, falling out of the Champions League leaves Chelsea out of the competition next season.

It’s not so much the fact that Chelsea lost, it was the way in which their players performed that tells us a lot about the club’s future. Read on to discover the top five things we’ve learned after watching Chelsea fall at the hands of PSG.
