3. Guus Hiddink may be running out of steam

Many pundits and fans, myself included, have questioned whether or not Chelsea wouldn’t be better off keeping Guus Hiddink as their permanent manager. Their failure to do so at this point in the season may have finally caught up with the interim manager’s ability to get the best of his team.

Even the most talented manager is going to struggle to motivate his squad when they know he isn’t going to be their once the season is over. Hiddink deserves a ton of credit for keeping most of the squad interested in the season this long.

Now, he’ll face an even bigger challenge to keep Chelsea’s stars motivated. They no longer have the carrot of Champions League football to hold their attention. They’re out of this year’s competition and have fallen too far behind the top four to qualify for next year.

That’s naturally going to leave a lot of Chelsea players wondering what they really have to play for. Call me crazy, but I don’t think many of the club’s stars are going to really gear up to make sure they secure Europa League qualification. Hiddink’s ability to motivate Chelsea moving forward is going to be severely limited unless he’s named the club’s permanent manager.
