Top 5 Mexican players to play in MLS
5. Luis “El Matador” Hernandez
In the late 90’s Luis Hernandez was one of the hottest names coming out of Mexico. Hernandez was a dynamic striker with the ability score from the outside or wiggle his way through a defense. He built a goal-scoring reputation for his heroics in the 1998 World Cup where in two instances provided some of the greatest dramatics possible, take this one against Germany.
Hernandez spent the majority of his career in the Mexican League with Necaxa where he scored 37 goals in 125 games for the side based in Aguascalientes. He had one minor international stint in Argentina where he only played four matches for Boca Juniors, not a bad go as he tallied two goals. However, he headed back to Mexico where he felt more comfortable.
In 2000 MLS’ LA Galaxy extended their interest to the Mexican star by offering him $4 Million to come and do what he does best, score goals. Many will say Hernandez was a disappointment in the MLS, but notching 15 goals in 40 appearances is no disappointment.
While Hernandez was loaned to America in 2001, there’s still a sense that while he didn’t gain the attention to fill stadiums, he did have an impact on the field in the MLS.
