4. Rafa Marquez

Rafa Marquez started his career in Mexico playing for Atlas. Marquez rose in popularity with the Guadalajara side making 77 appearances and helping his team make their one and only championships final. As one of the top defenders in the world Marquez made his way to Europe in 1999 and played 250 matches for Monaco and Barcelona totaling 14 goals.

During that 12 year span, Rafa also starred in three World Cups for Mexico leading his country as captain to second round appearances in all three tournaments. After the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Marquez received many offers from top clubs in Europe, namely Juventus of Italy. Most thought he was headed there or a team similar after leaving Barcelona.

In late 2010 Rafa signed a three-year deal with the New York Red Bulls making him one of three designated players joining French international Thierry Henry. Marquez’s signing was supposed to be a huge victory for the American league. Continuing to amass big names, but that was to be short-lived. Tension built and Rafa was released in December 2012. He received heavy criticism for his injury issues as well as questions about his commitment to the team.

Marquez has gone on to play in Italy for a couple of years with Verona and is now back in Mexico with Atlas. Although his time in New York was not the best, he was one of the biggest names from Mexico to sign in the MLS. Sometimes, even a big name like Marquez doesn’t translate into it being a good fit.
