Top 5 Mexican players to play in MLS
2. Cuauhtémoc Blanco
Blanco was never the most athletic on any given field, but he possessed an uncanny ability to fend of defenders and score goals as a deep-lying striker. The bulk of his career was spent with Club America making 333 appearances and scoring 135 goals during that time. He made a few stops in Spain before making his way to the MLS and Chicago Fire.
Blanco is probably the only Mexican player to have had an incredible effect during his time playing in the United States. Between 2007-09, Blanco played for the Fire 95 times and netting 23 goals.
Along with a knack for scoring, Cuauhtémoc also invigorated a fanbase and created a large following while in Chicago. When he arrived in the U.S. he was greeted by thousands of fans to get his autograph and a glimpse of the Mexican star.
He really made a splash when he arrived, Blanco was voted as a finalist for both the MVP and Newcomer of the Year awards in 2007. The accolades kept coming as he was awarded “Goal of the Year” in his first season with this beauty.
Cuauhtémoc would go on to be one of the highest paid players in Major League Soccer just behind David Beckham. Blanco may not be number one on this list, but he had the biggest effect on a league looking to grow.
