Is Fernando Torres headed to Liga MX?

Fernando Torres would be a colossal signing for Rayados of Monterrey and Liga MX.

Monterrey, who currently leads Liga MX with 24 points and looks to be a legitimate title contender has potentially sent shock waves through the league. According to a report from Cancha.com los Rayados plan to make a move for Fernando Torres this Summer.

This is a symbolic move as according to the publication, Monterrey is riding momentum after their 1-0 win over inter-city rival Tigres. Tigres themselves have had great success with their own international signing of Frenchman Andre-Pierre Gignac who leads the league in goals scored this season. Essentially, Monterrey wants their own “Gignac” to bolster their powerful attack.

Currently, Torres is signed with Atletico Madrid through the end of the season, but there’s been some speculation that he might want explore new opportunities. According to PubliMetro.com MLS teams will have their say in trying to sign the Spanish international. Teams like NYFC will be in line to acquire his services as fellow Spaniard David Villa currently plays for the MLS side.

However, in an interview with Spanish radio station COPE, Torres made it clear he wants to stay in Spain and play for the club he started with his career with.

Torres, now 32 years of age, was a popular up and coming talent in the early 2000’s as he came up through the Atletico Madrid youth system. He would eventually move up to the senior team and spend the next six years playing for the Spanish side scoring 82 goals in 214 appearances. Given his early successes for Atleti and the Spanish national team, Torres was acquired by Liverpool in late 2007.

He would go on to have a successful career at Liverpool scoring 65 goals, but in January 2011 Torres made the move to Chelsea which broke the Premiere League transfer fee, which was a reported £50 million. Torres would spend the next four years with the London side then eventually playing briefly for the Italian club Milan and now holding a spot with Atleti once again.

Torres has seemingly been on the decline the last few years, but he reached a milestone in February when he scored his 100th goal with Atletico in a 3-1 win over Valencia.

While Cancha reports negotiations are still yet to begin, Torres heading to Liga MX could create an avenue for more top flight European players to consider the Mexican League as a viable option. Torres would join fellow international Rogelio Funes Mori of Argentina and Dorlan Pabon of Colombia as leading strikers for Rayados.
