Tottenham know after their defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund they need to upgrade their personnel prior to next season’s Champions League

Tottenham were thoroughly outclassed in their Europa League match-up with Borussia Dortmund over the past two weeks. Perhaps if Mauricio Pochettino would have fielded his best 11, things would have been drastically different, but we can’t know how different.

What we do know, is that Dortmund showed a lot more high-level talent than Spurs over the course of the two matches. For Tottenham, it was a snapshot of what life may be like in the Champions League next season.

Fortunately for Tottenham, they have a chance to upgrade their squad significantly before they test themselves against the best Europe has to offer. If Daniel Levy and Pochettino are smart, they will use the matches against the Bundesliga giants as instructional tools to guide their transfer policy this summer.

Focusing on the players coming in will occur plenty over the next few months, but now it’s time to evaluate what players can’t hack it at a Champions League level. This doesn’t necessarily mean they have to be sold, it just means they have to be relegated to Cup runs and appearances against weaker Premier League opponents. For many of these players, that demotion will lead to them leaving the club.

Read on to discover the five players that Tottenham must upgrade if they’re going to be a factor in next year’s Champions League.
