6. Atletico Madrid

The recent success of the hard working, gritty and determined Atletico Madrid is anchored on their manager Diego Simeone. The bulldog-esque Argentinian is harsh but fair, hard-nosed and a scrapper. The epitome of a fighter, Simeone has molded his team into a side that is tough to beat. They are defensively excellent, are prepared to kick you off the park if that is what’s necessary to win. While their squad possesses great talent, they don’t mind being labeled as physical and robust. They have an interest in winning, not playing fancy.

All these traits were on display in their 0-0 aggregate draw with PSV. After 210 minutes, neither side had scored, and it took 15 penalties until the sides could be separated, with Juanfran ultimately converting the decisive spot kick. However, rather than looking at this result as Madrid being held to a 0-0 draw by the lowly PSV, it should be revered. To hold a dangerous offensive side like PSV to no goals after 210 minutes of game time is an outstanding achievement. While the lack of goals at the other end may be a viable concern, the defensive ability of this sides merits their inclusion with some of the best sides in Europe. It is their defense that puts them on this list, unfortunately, though, it is their attacking bluntness that limits their potential.
