Liverpool would be making a colossal mistake if they signed Alvaro Morata to replace Christian Benteke this summer
Liverpool fans are desperate for the club to purchase a big-name striker to replace flop Christian Benteke this summer. That’s all well and good, but if they splash the cash for Juventus front man Alvaro Morata, it could be an even bigger disaster at Anfield.
Real Madrid is expected to exercise their buyback clause for the Spanish striker this summer. The La Liga giants don’t intend to keep Morata, they simply believe they can flip him for a substantial profit to another club. It seems that Morata is well aware of this fact and is working to promote himself as of late.
The Champions League winning striker was quoted by Marca as saying “Germany and England are both countries where my style of football could be better suited.” He even claimed that Italy was the worst country in the world to showcase his talent as a striker. You don’t need to be a football insider to realize the chances of him returning to Juventus next season are pretty slim.

Morata’s comments figure to set off a fire storm of interest in both England and Germany. It’s suspected that Liverpool could be one of the Premier League clubs most interested in the talented centre-forward. After all, Benteke has been an absolute disaster for them up front this season and figures to be off this summer. It’s perfectly logical to expect them to spend big on a top-quality striker this summer.
Liverpool fans should hope and pray that they do not break the bank for Morata. He certainly is a very talented striker, and could score goals by the bushel for the right Premier League club. Liverpool, managed by Jurgen Klopp, is certainly not the right club for Morata.
Also subtly buried in his comments about where he might play next season was the revelation that he doesn’t like all of the running he has to do at Juventus. Specifically, he commented, “I am not used to having to run almost 14 km in a game – they are the numbers of a midfielder. But all this is serving me well for my future.” This is certainly not the attitude of a striker that would thrive under Klopp.
Liverpool need to purchase a striker with an immensely high work-rate to function at the top of Klopp’s press. They cannot afford to spend big money on Morata only to have him shirk that responsibility.
Buying Morata at the price he is sure to command would almost necessitate Klopp playing him every week. What would he do when Morata failed to put pressure on opposing centre-backs? Could he really afford to bench a player they club had invested in so heavily? At the very best, it would be a tricky situation. At worst, it could devolve into a total nightmare for all involved.

Alvaro Morata could very well end up in the Premier League next season. He might also score a plethora of goals for the club that purchases him. If that club is Liverpool though, count on Morata and Klopp mixing like oil and water.
