4. Nathaniel Clyne

Right-back Nathaniel Clyne has every physical attribute necessary to be a top-drawer Premier League defender. Unfortunately, he can’t seem to put those physical gifts to use on the pitch consistently enough to be that good of a player.

In Clyne’s defense, he’s been Liverpool’s most durable player this season. No matter who the boss has been, he’s been on the pitch. He’s played an incredible 38 matches this season for the club. That’s an impressive feat no matter what position you play, but especially as a fullback playing for Klopp.

The trouble is that despite his number of appearances, Clyne really hasn’t played all that well for Liverpool. His average Whoscored.com player rating is just 6.78 in Premier League play which means his rating falls below the league average. That’s not good enough for a team that has top four aspirations.

I’m not advocating that Liverpool go out and sell Clyne because I think his performance might improve if he’s given some rest next season. I would, however, like to see Klopp bring in another right-back who could serve in a platoon with Clyne. That should address what’s been a very mediocre position for Liverpool this season.
