5. Ross Barkley

This area of the field is where the youth of this talented English team will start to show. At 22, Barkley will be making his first start in a major competition for England, along with Eric Dier and the next midfielder. But, they all deserve to start.

More from Euro 2016

Barkley deserves to start because of his strength and his ability to keep the ball extremely well. He almost always finds his way out of trouble for Everton and don’t expect anything different when he starts for England this summer. He is already a fun player to watch, but he will be a great player for England in the future.

Barkley has scored eight goals and has seven assists this season for Everton. Along with his creativity, he adds some much-needed size to this midfield. At 6’2”, Barkley can win a header against most midfielders he faces.

Although young, he, like Eric Dier, does not play like he is young for Everton. The question is whether or not he can play like that for England. If he has confidence for this English team, he could help lead them deep into this tournament. Even if he is lacking confidence, England need him to step up and start for them in this midfield role.
