John Stones would flourish under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United

At this point it’s pretty clear that John Stones isn’t going to reach his full potential playing for Roberto Martinez at Everton. Fortunately for the young English defender, he will have significantly better options available to him this summer.

One such possibility would be for Stones to take his talents to Old Trafford. Squawka.com reports that Jose Mourinho will take over at Manchester United this summer and has already blessed a transfer move for Stones.

Some might be surprised to learn that Mourinho would sanction a move for Stones given his lack of experience. “The Special One” isn’t exactly renowned for his desire to develop young talent and help coach them through their mistakes. Instead, he usually prefers to rely on a heavy dose of veterans in his starting 11.

Mourinho is willing to make an exception regarding Stones because he can see what prodigious talent the young defender possesses. He can see that Stones has world-class ability despite his struggles on the pitch this year. He also is supremely confident that he is a superior manager to Martinez.

For Mourinho, the prospect of managing Stones at Manchester United is a win-win situation. He can acquire a supremely talented player who can help him win matches, and he also gets a reclamation project that he can profit by fixing. Expect a mountain of articles praising Mourinho if he can right Stones’ game next season.

For the classy defender, the chance to play at United for Mourinho is a no-brainer. His game would mature greatly under the strict, no-nonsense style of the former Chelsea boss. Mourinho would certainly be able to cut out the mental vacations Stones tends to take all too often this season.

While Roberto Martinez can’t seem to coach that out of his talented youngster, he’d only make that sort of mistake with the ball once under Mourinho. He’d be permitted to show off his skill on the ball, but not in the irrational manner he’s shown for the Toffees. That part of his game would improve dramatically and immediately at United.

Moving to Old Trafford would also afford Stones the opportunity to form a long-lasting partnership with fellow English defender Chris Smalling. That could pay dividends for both the Red Devils and the Three Lions over the next several seasons. Don’t underestimate that possibility as a huge motivating factor for Stones’ next career move.
