Perhaps Romelu Lukaku doesn’t remember how bad playing for Jose Mourinho at Chelsea was…

Everton forward Romelu Lukaku should report to a physio immediately to check for short-term memory loss. That’s the only reasonable explanation for his reported willingness to reunite with former boss Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

The Telegraph reports that the prolific Belgian striker is willing to forget his past differences with Mourinho in order to play for him at Manchester United. I’m all for forgiveness, but that sort of thinking sounds more like madness to me.

As a young striker, Lukaku was absolutely miserable playing under Mourinho at Chelsea. The Blues boss never trusted him to lead the line and sent him out on loan several seasons in a row. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Lukaku was ecstatic when he was able to secure a permanent move away from Stamford Bridge.

Things started positively enough for him at Everton which only served to make his decision look better and better. He was immediately installed as the Toffees’ first choice striker and he repaid their faith by scoring goals by the bushel. Initially it looked as if his stellar play might be enough to push Everton into the upper echelon of the Premier League.

This season has been a total nightmare for the Belgian hit man. He’s played well enough himself, but his teammates haven’t come close to holding up their end of the bargain. He’s led an Everton attack that’s scored plenty of goals, but their defense has been so porous it’s dragged the Toffees into the bottom half of the Premier League table. His team’s struggles have caused him to desperately search for a new home next season.

He must be absolutely miserable at Goodison Park. For him to consider subjecting himself to another dose of Mourinho management he must be horribly depressed playing for Roberto Martinez. While I can’t blame him for being thoroughly unhappy, or for wanting to find a new home, I have to question the judgment of a potential move to play under Mourinho.

It’s not as if the Belgian’s only choices are staying at Everton or going to play for Mourinho at Untied. Given his age, talent and goal scoring record, he’s going to be an immensely popular target in the summer transfer market. There aren’t more than a handful of teams in the world that wouldn’t be interested in making a strong bid for Lukaku if he were made available.

He should take his time and let the transfer process play out this summer before making a hasty switch to United. He should be searching for a manager that will trust him and allow himself to express himself offensively. His history with Mourinho gives us no indication that would be the case at Old Trafford.

Romelu Lukaku must choose his move away from Everton wisely. If he opts to trust his future to Jose Mourinho once again, I fear he’ll experience another unhappy ending playing for the egomaniacal manager.
