FC Kansas City: championship ring typo
Misspellings can change the meaning of a lot of things, in FC Kansas City’s case, a misspelling made them proud to be the NSWL champions instead of the NWSL champions
Typically when you buy any sort of jewelry there is some sort of return policy that allows you to take it back in a timely manner, but what happens when you order your championship rings, get them in, and later find out there is a major mistake on it? Whatever happens, the FC Kansas City squad is currently having to deal with just that.
Before their season opening game last Saturday, FC Kansas City was able to distribute their 2015 NWSL championship rings to their players without knowing that there was a major error.
Before long, FCKC tweeted out a picture showing off their NWSL back-to-back championship rings, obviously a joyous moment and definitely something to be proud of, but it didn’t take too much time very before fans pointed out a very huge typo and unfortunately the typo wasn’t simply in the text of the tweet… it was on the ring! Apparently no one in the organization noticed the typo, but fans pointed out that instead of the league’s “NWSL” acronym, the rings proudly displayed “NSWL”. Oops!
FC Kansas City went on to lose their match on April 16 1-0 to the Western New York Flash and are planning to make up for it by beating the Portland Thorns this week.
The team was able to show an initial sense of humor about the typo on their social media platform by tweeting out “When Twitter points out a type on your championship rings…” with a picture attached, but both that tweet along with the tweet showing off the error ridden rings have since been deleted, but FCKC was sure to keep fans updated by posting that they are expecting to order new rings- this time without the error and shared a photo, again, of the ring with the typo on the side.
What does this mean for a league that is trying their best to support their stars who also play internationally for the United States Women’s National Team during their “equal play, equal pay” fight against the United States Soccer Federation?
I guess what it comes down to is the fact that it’s no one in the league’s fault (even though there’s someone in the higher-ups of the organization who had to sign off on the design of the ring and at some point over looked the fact that the league acronym was, in fact, not correct) and of course there is always the idea that everyone makes mistakes… in this case at some level a big mistake was made- especially since the reception of championship rings is such a pivotal moment for the athletes who earned those rings in any sport. I guess FCKC is going to have to double-check their 2014 rings to make sure those don’t have any mistakes.

In any case, we can expect to wait a bit before seeing new championship rings given to the FC Kansas City stars, but for now the organization focuses on their season’s schedule and their upcoming match against Portland on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
