Manchester United missing out on Renato Sanches’ signature tells us a great deal about the Red Devils’ future

Manchester United failing to win the transfer race for Renato Sanches is more than just a blow to the Red Devils’ summer transfer plans. It’s actually a huge tip on the direction of the Premier League club’s immediate future.

Optimistic United fans will chalk up the transfer miss to the fact that he’s choosing Bayern Munich because they are temporarily a better side. After all, they’re assured of Champions League football next season and will enter the campaign as a strong favorite to win yet another Bundesliga title.

That explanation is just a little too convenient for me. Sanches is a player that United have been chasing for most of the year. The club’s interest in the Benfica product was real, highly publicized, and his signing at Old Trafford was reported as a mere formality on several occasions. This is a player that Ed Woodward had focused serious effort and attention on. United’s interest in Sanches was far from a passing fancy.

As such, we can make some significant conclusions about Manchester United’s immediate future based on this transfer miss. Read on to discover the top five things Manchester United fans should learn after missing out on Renato Sanches.
