Jose Mourinho would be the perfect manager for Everton

Jose Mourinho might be too good a manager for Everton. It’s possible that Mourinho might be out of the Toffees’ reach. That’s no excuse for the club not to do everything it can to hire him to replace Roberto Martinez.

There might not be a man alive better suited to replace Roberto Martinez than Jose Mourinho. He might be the polar opposite of the affable Spanish boss. That’s exactly what Everton need at this point in their history. They simply can’t afford to get this hire wrong.

Martinez was the consummate player’s manager. He’s able to get along with even the most difficult of personalities and the majority of his players absolutely love him. Critics of Martinez would point out that all of his players love him because he doesn’t drive them hard enough. He’s especially light on his teams in terms of their defense.

It’s safe to say that none of those things can be said about Mourinho. The prickly Portuguese boss has managed to engage in conflict with stars all over the globe. He’s also one of the most strict defensive coaches in football today. In short, he’s just what Everton need.

The Toffees have enough talent in their squad to compete for European competition at the very least. For me, they were the biggest underachievers in the Premier League this season. Bringing in a boss like Mourinho would be the simplest way for the club to turn that around.

First and foremost, Mourinho would bring instant defensive organization to the club. You wouldn’t see John Stones gallivanting all over the pitch with the ball with The Special One in charge. He could immediately turn the Everton back four from a total weakness into a relative strength.

Sure, it’s possible that he might restrict the club’s offensive attack, but wouldn’t that be a small price to pay for defensive stability? It’s not as if the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley wouldn’t find a way to score goals under Mourinho. It’s quite likely that they’d enjoy more scoring opportunities in front of a solid defense compared to the patchwork defense they played in front of this season.

Mourinho would also provide Everton with instant credibility in the transfer market. As it stands, top-flight targets aren’t going to consider heading to Merseyside given Everton’s struggles this past season. Their absence of European football will only compound that problem. Hiring a manager of Mourinho’s stature would make it easy for big-name transfer targets to overlook those negatives.

Everton have a unique opportunity to acquire one of football’s greatest managers. They simply must take advantage of Manchester United’s hesitancy to snap up Jose Mourinho and use him to torment their Premier League rivals for years to come.
