3. Gerard Pique was fantastic in defense

Javier Mascherano is the heart and soul of the Barcelona backline. He is the vocal leader and helps get everyone organized and that’s just the tactical part of the game. The center back also makes key tackles and is great at blocking shots, making up for his lack of height by excelling in other parts on defense.

That is why FC Barcelona started to sweat when Mascherano was sent off in the first half when he brought down Kevin Gamiero right outside the box. The Frenchman’s speed was going to be a problem for Barcelona and it kicked them in the gut with the red card.

The pressure was now on Gerard Pique to be the leader of the backline and he answered the call. The defender stepped up for the Catalans, making key clearances, blocks, and almost scored off a set piece. He is often criticized for his play but this time, he proved the doubters wrong. Pique has always played like a more attacking defender rather than staying back. But this time, he showed he can play solid defense when he is the best CB on the backline. Credit to Pique for playing his heart out and helping the Catalans somehow keep a clean sheet, something they shouldn’t have gotten away with.
