Real Madrid won their 11th UEFA Champions League trophy, defeating Atletico Madrid 5-3 on penalties

It was a nervous and tense Champions League final but Real Madrid captured yet another Champions League trophy as they defeated Atletico Madrid 5-3 on penalties. It was none other than Cristiano Ronaldo who scored the game-winning penalty as he calmed slotted it past Jon Oblak for the winner.

Real Madrid took the lead early on in the match in the 15th minute as Sergio Ramos scored the opener. The centre-back got a flick from Gareth Bale off a set piece and pushed the ball past Jon Oblak. It was controversial considering that Ramos looked to be offside. But the goal was given and Real Madrid was ahead at the half 1-0.

Antoine Griezmann had a chance to level things for Atletico in the 48th minute. Fernando Torres was taken down by a tackle from Pepe in the box and Mark Clattenburg pointed to the spot. It was a golden chance for Atleti to equalize but Griezmann banged it off the crossbar and out. But in the 79th minute, Atletico Madrid grabbed their equalizer. It was Juanfran who crossed the ball and in and it was finished by Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, who smashed it into the back of the net.

The game then went into extra time and then penalties where the first seven penalties were made until Juanfran’s effort hit the post and bounced out. Then Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to the spot and everyone knows what happens next. He scored.
