4. Dani Carvajal’s injury was not good for Real Madrid

It was very unfortunate for Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal to pick up an injury in the Champions League final. You could tell by the tears streaming down his face as he walked off the pitch that he didn’t want to leave but he had to. He was replaced by Danilo, the new fullback from Porto and he did not have a good game coming off the bench.

He had a lot of shaky clearances on the wing that led to some Atletico throws. At times, he looked like he didn’t know what he was doing. But his worst mistake came during the equalizer for Atletico Madrid.

When Juanfran ran into the box, Danilo fell asleep on defense for just a couple of seconds. That was enough time to allow Yannick Carrasco to run by him and be on the receiving end of the cross from the Spanish right-back. Carrasco smashed the ball into the back of the net and the final was level.

Thankfully for Real Madrid, he seemed to settle down in extra time and helped Madrid gain some confidence in the final third. He was moving into areas and creating mini-chances for Madrid. It was a risky substitution that they had to make due to injury but it didn’t cost them.
