Time for Tottenham to sign Daley Blind
Tottenham would do well to sign the versatile Manchester United player
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of having players that are capable of filling in at multiple positions on the pitch. That’s why Spurs would be wise to make a bold move for Manchester United star Daley Blind.
Blind’s place at United next season has come into question due to the arrival of Jose Mourinho, and some believe that he could end up on the transfer list this summer. If that is the case, Spurs shouldn’t waste any time making a bold move to swoop for the talented defender.
For Spurs, signing Blind would allow them to provide cover at two key positions with one swift signature. Blind excelled for Louis van Gaal in central defense, but most agree that his more natural position is to play as a defensive midfielder. It just so happens that Tottenham could use some additional cover in both spots.

In particular, Pochettino’s squad has a pronounced need for more options in the defensive midfield. The club relied too heavily on Eric Dier and Mousa Dembele to man the double-pivot last year and were fortunate that neither missed significant time due to injury. Midfield options will have to be bolstered to better protect the squad from injury drop off or simply to cope with the pressures of Champions League football.
Spurs’ need to add to their central defensive options haven’t gotten as much press as the midfield issue, but it’s still an area that needs attention this summer. Tottenham have three good options at centre-back with Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Kevin Wimmer, but after that the depth is murky at best.
The club hopes that Cameron Carter-Vickers can step up to the senior squad next year, but the addition of Blind would allow the club to bring him along at a much slower, safer pace.
Despite his lack of size for the combative position, Blind posted an above-average Whoscored.com player rating of 7.13 in 39 appearances last season. He isn’t going to displace any of Tottenham’s first three centre-back options, but he’d be an excellent insurance policy in the case of injury. Also, imagine the luxury of being able to play Blind as a central defender in cup competitions next season to rest Alderweireld and/or Vertonghen.
