Philippe Coutinho should snub PSG to remain at Liverpool for the long haul

Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho would be a fool to leave Jurgen Klopp’s side at this point in his career. A potential move to PSG would offer him guaranteed Champions League football, but would stunt his career growth at a crucial point in his football life.

Reports in France allege that the French champions are willing to offer a transfer fee upwards of 45 million pounds for the Brazilian attacker. Liverpool are reportedly dead set on keeping hold of their talisman, but Coutinho’s camp has at the very least been intrigued by the idea of making the move to the French capital.

In some ways, I can understand why Coutinho might consider making the move. PSG are unquestionably the best team in Ligue 1, and he’d certainly have the opportunity to play for silverware on a regular basis. There’s also the aforementioned fact that they’re nearly a lock to be in the Champions League each year.

PSG are also very likely offering Coutinho a significant increase in wages as part of a potential deal. It’s not as if he’s a pauper at Liverpool though. Something tells me he can get by just fine on his current wages and may even be able to convince Liverpool to offer him an improved contract to stay.

However, Coutinho and his representatives need to see past those short-term assurances to determine the best path for their client. If they are really interested in Coutinho maximizing his footballing ability there’s no better place for him than Anfield.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has proven time and time again in his career that he can elevate the play of players just like Coutinho. His best squads at Dortmund featured attacking talent like Reus, Mkhitaryan and Lewandowski just to name a few. Each man experienced serious career growth after learning the game under Klopp.

That doesn’t mean that Coutinho should stay at Liverpool forever, it just means that he still has a lot to learn from the German boss. The right path would be for him to remain at Anfield for at least a couple more seasons to gain all the knowledge and development he can from his charismatic boss. At that point, he can really evaluate where the club is headed long-term and whether or not he’d be wise to seek greener pastures.

The bright lights of Paris might be appealing to Coutinho, but he should stick it out at Liverpool for at least another season. He still has a lot to learn under Jurgen Klopp’s tutelage and he owes it to himself to see just how good he can become in the Premier League.
