VfL Wolfsburg

Finished: 8th in Bundesliga with 45 points

After starting off the season with a Supercup win in penalties against German champions Bayern Munich, it seemed that Wolfsburg were set for a great season. They had just sold their top player Kevin De Bruyne to  Manchester City, but were still optimistic that they could finish in a good spot. They started the season strong, grabbing 11 points from their first five matches.

This was by no means a tale of things to come, however, as the club went on to lose 3 of their last five matches, ultimately knocking them out of any European qualification hopes. The teams abysmal away record of three wins, four draws and 10 losses was no help either, and it was clear that the team was not comfortable away from their home stadium at the Volkswagen Arena.

Though they are not in European competition next season, the team performed very well in the Champions League this past year. They won their group, and managed to knock off Gent in the Round of 16. Their quarterfinal opponents in Real Madrid proved to be too tough for them. Despite winning the first leg of the tie 2-0 in Germany, the team went on to lose on the road 3-0 to the Spanish giants, dumping them out of the competition. The club hopes to rebound next season and at the least qualify for the Europa League.
