DEPARTURE: Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Tactically, this might be the transfer that will prove most difficult to deal with. Mkhitaryan came to Dortmund in 2013 for 27.5 million Euros. Since then the Armenian international has shown that he is capable of playing elite football. His first year with the club saw him excel as he took over the role of central midfielder from the recently departed Mario Götze.

He quickly showed that Jürgen Klopp was right to bring him in. Scoring 13 goals and setting up a slew of others it was evident that his style integrated well with the “rock-and-roll” style off football that Klopp claimed he loved to employ. The following season saw him struggle somewhat as the entire club struggled. Dortmund sat in dead last by the winter break and Mkhitaryan had appeared to be playing with much less confidence than Dortmund fans were accustomed to seeing. After fighting hard in the second half of the season to salvage a seventh place finish, Mkhitaryan saw a massive return to form this year scoring 23 goals in all competitions.

Dortmund has the quality to perhaps get by without him but they absolutely must bring in experienced depth for their lineup. Reports indicate that Mkhitaryan is headed to Manchester United for a hefty fee of 42 million Euros. Next Dortmund must bid farewell to their captain.
