Manchester United reportedly will outbid Real Madrid for Paul Pogba but that may not matter in the end

Manchester United fans have every right to be ecstatic over their club’s willingness to outbid Real Madrid for French star Paul Pogba. The sad news for fans at Old Trafford is that even if they do outbid the La Liga juggernauts, they still might not end up with the highly coveted midfielder.

Reports all across Europe claim that United are prepared to bid over 100 million pounds to bring Pogba back to the Premier League. Those same reports claim that Real Madrid won’t be willing to lodge a bid of that size, even for such a talent as Pogba.

Ordinarily, stars of Pogba’s caliber end up signing with the highest bidder. This situation may end differently though. Reputable sources insist that Pogba strongly prefers a move to Real Madrid over playing for Jose Mourinho next season.

That could lead to a scenario where United are the high-bidder for Pogba, but still don’t win the race for his services. Pogba and his representatives are far from powerless in these negotiations. They don’t have to sanction a move to England if the player has his heart set on Madrid.

If the situation breaks down this way, it will be a tremendous blow to quite a few egos at Manchester United. The club’s ownership will struggle to cope with the fact that a star like Pogba would want to play football anywhere else. In particular, Jose Mourinho’s mind may positively explode if Pogba snubs playing for him in favor of Zinedine Zidane’s tutelage.

From a more objective perspective, it’s pretty simple to see why Pogba might prefer the move to Madrid. They currently have considerably more talented than United and have a much better chance at competing for titles next season. Manchester United hopes to progress to that level under Mourinho, but it’s not something that’s going to happen overnight.

Let’s also not forget that Pogba has already seen fit to leave Manchester United once. Should it really surprise anyone that he isn’t overly excited to return to a place where he was previously so unhappy? Truthfully, there isn’t a lot for him to get excited about a move back to United other than money.

It’s not as if Real Madrid aren’t going to make a competitive wage offer for Pogba either. They may not see fit to match United’s transfer fee offer to Juventus, but they could still give Pogba the same wage packet that he’d receive in the Premier League. If that happens, then the offers are identical from Pogba’s perspective. It’s not his job to make sure Juventus get the best fee possible.

Manchester United fans should be satisfied with their club’s level of ambition and willingness to spend to acquire a player like Paul Pogba. They must realize though, that Pogba may still choose Real Madrid in spite of their supreme ambition.
