Chelsea are the perfect club to help N’Golo Kante further his professional career

Leicester City fans aren’t going to want to hear this, but N’Golo Kante is making the right move by engineering a switch to Chelsea. The French midfielder will thrive under the disciplined regime of Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge.

Numerous reports claim that Chelsea will sign Kante within the next week or two for a transfer fee somewhere north of his 20 million pound release clause. His departure will be a huge blow for league champion Leicester City while providing Chelsea with a much-needed infusion of talent in their midfield.

From Chelsea’s perspective, acquiring a significant talent like Kante was always a no brainer. The fact that they were able to significantly weaken a Premier League rival at the same time was only a bonus.

From the perspective of the star midfielder, it was a much more complicated decision. All summer the French international has been forced to wrestle with the choice of whether or not to forsake the Premier League’s best story for greener (pun intended) pastures. Once he made the choice to leave his current club, Chelsea was really the perfect choice.

More from Playing for 90

First and foremost, Kante is an ideal fit for the system that Conte will install at Chelsea. He’s a no-nonsense, tidy midfielder that specializes in his ability to break enemy attacks. That clean, defensive mindset will play perfectly in the system of the former Italy boss. He will immediately slot into the Blues’ starting 11 without a moment’s hesitation.

Secondly, he has just the perfect personality to fit right into the Chelsea dressing room. The last thing the club needs is to acquire more difficult personalities for Conte to manage. They have quite enough of that with the likes of Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard. Kante will come in, do his job, and for the most part, keep his mouth shut.

He also won’t be counted on to provide any offensive punch with his new club. As good as he is defensively, he isn’t an overly dynamic player going forward. If he were to move to a club that really needed offensive punch from him, he could find himself quickly out of favor with a fickle fan base. Chelsea has that fickle fan base, but they won’t be counting on Kante to contribute many goals or assists.

Leicester City fans will claim that N’Golo Kante should have stayed put, but I can’t begrudge him for moving to a bigger club. Once he made the decision to forsake the Foxes, Chelsea was clearly the best available option.
