As Manchester United close in on signing Paul Pogba, fans have to ask themselves, do we really want him?

Reports are coming out of England seemingly every hour that Juventus and France midfielder Paul Pogba is on the verge of a mega money return to Old Trafford as Mourinho’s marquee signing of the summer with rumors flying that he will cost the Red Devils over £100m

This leaves Manchester United fans with a difficult question, do we really want a player that refused Sir Alex Fergusons tutelage and demanded first team football at the tender age of 19?

Pogba, now 23 years old, has since gone on to earn a very good reputation with Juventus, helping them achieve domestic dominance and the brink of European glory only to be foiled by Messi and co. But is he really worth the money that’s being discussed here?

More from Manchester United

Skyports Italy reports Juventus want Manchester United to break the world record for him and pay upwards of £100m. Mourinho and Woodward seem happy to do so.

Pogba had a decent Euro 2016 with host nation France but let’s be very clear, he did not set the tournament alight and Sissoko worked harder than him in the midfield for France’s fairly easy run to the final which saw them lose to a Ronaldo-less Portugal.

Sir Alex said in 2012 while trying to get Pogba to sign a new deal that the players agent Mino Raiolla, was whispering in the lads ear and leading him away from the Theatre of Dreams, and has reiterated this in his new book “Leading”.

It is also worth mentioning that Raiola is also the agent of a certain Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and has already got the 34 year old with zero premier league experience £200k per week so we already know he is a master negotiater or Ed Woodward had one too many glasses of wine at that meeting. So Raiolla most likely has more control over this transfer than Juventus, Manchester United or the player himself.

Do Manchester United really need Pogba?

This is a loaded question sure to spark many a heated debate in pubs around the world. The centre midfield positions are something we have struggled to fill permanently since the glory days of Keane and Scholes, Michael Carrick is still very capable of a deadly pass even at the age of 34 and can split duties with Schweinsteiger provided they both stay healthy.

Fan favorite Ander Herrara is there to provide options as well as Schneiderlin,Rooney and Fellani. Ok so the last name there will hopefully be on his way out before the season begins as one good game every five is just not the quality this team demands.

So honestly I do not believe Pogba is worth a world record fee plus the crazy wages that follow as he is not a player with the “x factor” needed to inspire a team or lead a fightback (a la Roy Keane 1999 champions league semi final in Turin).

Bringing Pogba back to Manchester United for this money is just another sign of Mourinho looking for the instant gratification that a short term manager needs.
