8 Tottenham players with the most to prove during ICC
4. DeAndre Yedlin
It’s not an exaggeration to say that this summer might be make or break for DeAndre Yedlin’s time at Tottenham. He has a real opportunity to push Kieran Trippier out-of-the-way as the club’s backup right back, but he will need to show Pochettino real consistency to get that done.
I must admit that before this week I thought Yedlin’s days at Spurs were numbered. Then, reports emerged that the club were seriously considering selling Trippier to Southampton. That means that either Pochettino is considering another right back purchase (such as Matthias Ginter) or that Yedlin has shown him something this summer.
While I think the American has some impressive athletic gifts, I think the possibility of selling Trippier has more to do with the possibility of signing a new right back than hopes for Yedlin’s emergence. He had a mediocre loan for Sunderland last season and it’s possible that his career growth is starting to plateau.
Nonetheless, this summer is Yedlin’s opportunity to take a significant step forward. If he can start to show a solid amount of skill to go with that world-class athleticism then there will be a place for him at Tottenham. If he can’t show serious signs of that sort of professional growth, he may end up at a club like Sunderland for good.
