3. Harry Winks is better than Tom Carroll

Tom Carroll is beginning to rival Nacer Chadli as the Tottenham player I most want to see sold this summer. I have nothing against Carroll’s attitude or effort level, but I just don’t think he has the athletic talent required to make an impact at a club competing in the Champions League.

Carroll’s level of play against Juventus was even weaker than normal. In fact, it gave Harry Winks an opportunity to show his readiness to make an impact with the senior squad. I thought it was pretty obvious that he was superior to Carroll in every aspect.

One performance isn’t enough to allow Winks to supplant Carroll in the midfield pecking order, but it’s a start. Carroll will need to significant up his game if he wants to stay ahead of the upstart in this race.

Honestly, it’s best for Spurs if Winks can go ahead and push Carroll out the door. It might be the club’s last chance to recoup a significant transfer fee for Carroll and at his age, it’s unlikely that he’s going to drastically improve. Winks is younger, cheaper and has more upside. Tottenham fans should hope he wins out.
