It’s easy to think of Herrera as a bit-part player for Louis van Gaal, but the truth is he appeared in 27 matches for the club. He had plenty of opportunities to settle in, but failed to ever come anywhere near hitting his stride.
Instead, he limped along and earned a sub par Whoscored.com player average of 6.77. That mark is below the Premier League average and certainly isn’t up to the standard of a first-choice United midfielder.
The club must also face the reality that Herrera, at 26 years of age, should already be in his footballing prime. He might be in a position to see some slight improvement over the next season or two, but he’s not going to get drastically better. As such, United are better off maximizing on his transfer value this summer.
