4. Bastian Schweinsteiger

Unlike the departure of Ander Herrera, the sale of Bastian Schweinsteiger seems inevitable given recent events. When you banish a 30 plus year old midfielder to the youth dressing room, it’s pretty obvious that he isn’t in your future plans.

I wrote yesterday that Mourinho’s treatment of the German legend is reprehensible, but the choice to sell him still makes sense. He just isn’t good enough to really help contribute anything meaningful to the United midfield this season.

The club should have allowed him to continue to participate with the first team until they found a suitable buyer. Instead, Mourinho’s petulance will cause his potential transfer value to plummet. Woodward will struggle to claim that Schweinsteiger can still help a big European club after his banishment at the hands of his manager.

Even so, Schweinsteiger could still command a significant transfer fee if he were willing to return to Germany or opt for the Chinese escape route. Otherwise, they’re likely going to offload him for a small transfer fee just to clear his substantial wages off their bill.
