Manchester United won the annual “curtain raiser” that is the FA Community Shield on sunday. Defender Luke Shaw says the Red Devils were aided by a man who has yet to kick a ball in the famous red jersey, ( this time around at least)
Manchester United left back Luke Shaw celebrated winning the first trophy of his career with Sunday’s 2-1 win over defending Premier League champions Leicester City and the 21 year old Englishman was quick to reveal that news of Paul Pogba’s impending medical for his record breaking transfer just hours before kick off gave the team a lift.
“After seeing that, there’s a good mood around the squad. It is another player to fit in to our strong squad, there will be people fighting for places now and that is what you need at a top club like Manchester United to push us all on to win more trophies like this.”
Shaw, who started coming into his own last season before suffering a horrific double leg break while facing PSV Eindhoven in the champions league on September 15th of last year, Seemed extremely happy and relieved to be back playing the game he loves and to have picked up his first professional winners medal; telling MUTV “I’m really happy because it’s my first trophy. I’m really happy for the team as well, this can kick-start our season.”

Paul Pogba will of course have been delighted with these comments as he finally completed his return to Manchester United for an astronomical fee reported to be £89million! Pogba had arrived at the club’s Carrington training facility shortly after 12pm on Monday. After his medical was eventually finished some 12+ hours later, he put pen to paper on a deal initially reported to net the player £230,000 per week. The fact this news broke in the wee hours of the morning has many scratching their heads. But the deal is done and Manchester United can at long last move forward.
Jose Mourinho has defended the fee telling skysports.com “What is crazy this season, is normal in 2 or 3 seasons”.
I feel like Morinho might be missing the point here, yes some fans are extremely happy by Manchester United breaking the record for the highest transfer fee paid, it is seen by some as a signal of intent to put the club back on the forefront in the eyes of the world and challenge for the top honors in the upcoming season.

But there are still many that question the Portuguese’ short term history. Signing a 23 year old for a world record fee toan initial 5 year deal will undoubtedly appease some of those concerns… For now.
Being Manchester United’s marquee summer signing should ensure we get to see Pogba make at least an appearance in Sunday’s Premier League opener against AFC Bournemouth and with the eyes of the world watching, we can only hope the young man hits the ground running.
But for this week at least, Luke Shaw, Paul Pogba and Manchester United can allow themselves to be a little excited for the upcoming season.
