3. Jan Vertonghen vs. Connor Wickham
Don’t forget that these two physical players have some history. Wickham arguably caused Vertonghen’s injury absence last season and it’s doubtful the Belgian has forgotten. The two may engage in another physical battle this weekend.
The key for both men will be to make sure they don’t do anything rash. Either is capable of making a foolish mistake that could lead to their club playing down a man. Clearly, such a decision would shift both clubs’ odds for success.
Vertonghen will also try to put his pretty weak performance at Everton behind him. The task of taking on his old nemesis might be the perfect thing to get him back into solid form.
Wickham will be looking to make an impression the club to stay in the frame for regular playing time. He’s certainly going to feel added pressure with the acquisition of Christian Benteke. It may be his last chance to impress Pardew enough to stay a factor.
