6. Scotland

It was hard to avoid the fact that Scotland was the only country from the United Kingdom not to qualify for Euro 2016. Even neighboring Ireland made the trip to France.

Scotland almost seem to have an inferiority complex. Even when one of their own achieves success it seems as if England are there to take the credit. Case in point is current Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. Whenever Murray loses the British press refer to him as Scottish. When he wins, he’s suddenly British.

As for soccer, Scotland has its own successful league. The Scottish Premier League, however, has generally been dominated by either Celtic or Rangers. The lure of the challenge presented by the more competitive Premier League has brought many Scots south of the border.

Past Scottish standouts in England include Gordon Strachan, Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Alan Hansen.

Presently there are 16 Scotsmen in the Premier League. Among them are Stoke’s hard man Charlie Adam, Crystal Palace midfielder James McArthur and Hull winger Robert Snodgrass.
