The popularity and competitive nature of the Bundesliga is the reason that many German soccer players do not leave the country to play professionally.  In fact, 17 of the 23 members of Germany’s 2014 World Cup winning side play for German clubs.

Some of the most notable Germans to have made a mark in the Premier League include former Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack and Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehman.

Dietmar Hamann made191 appearances for Liverpool from 1999-2006. He was a part of Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League winning squad.

Then there’s current United States head coach Jurgen Klinsmann who was a member of Tottenham during the early days of the Premier League.

The number of Germans currently playing in the Premier League is twelve. Recent signing Shkodran Mustafi, joins countrymen Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker at Arsenal. Robert Huth is a member of current champions Leicester City’s defense and midfielder Emre Can plays for Liverpool.

One of Germany’s all-time greats Bastian Schweinsteiger is now a member of Manchester United. Sadly the midfielder has been left on the sidelines by United manager Jose Mourinho. Schweinsteiger spent 13 seasons at Bayern Munich, playing in 500 matches and scoring 68 goals. He won eight Bundesliga titles one Champions League trophy and was a member of Germany’s 2014 World Cup winning squad. He joined Manchester United in 2015.
