Hugo Lloris-7

The French keeper made one key stop against Jermaine Defoe in the first half, and that was pretty much all he had to do on the day. I still want his distribution from the back to improve, but there’s really not much here to criticize. He gets a pretty ordinary, but solid, 7 on the day.

Jan Vertonghen-6.5

I have to confess that watching Vertonghen play left back absolutely infuriates me. It’s my least favorite thing about watching him play for Belgium, and today’s performance reminded me why I feel that way.

He was adequate defensively, but he provides the club almost nothing going forward down the flank. He put in a fine performance against Sunderland, but reminded every Tottenham fan why we miss Danny Rose so much.

Toby Alderweireld-7

The more I watch Alderweireld play, the more impressed I become. In fact, he might be Tottenham’s most irreplaceable player.

He didn’t do anything flashy against Sunderland yesterday, but he didn’t need to. He put in another solid shift for the club and distributed the ball efficiently from the back. He didn’t get a real opportunity to stand out given Sunderland’s complete lack of possession.

Eric Dier-7

The English defender wasn’t great against the Black Cats, but it was his best performance in a Spurs shirt this season. He moved back to his original centre back position without any hesitation or difficulties. He did what he was supposed to do. Nothing more, nothing less.

Kyle Walker-7.5

It wasn’t the right back’s best performance on the year, but he was pretty good once again. In the absence of Rose he was heavily relied upon to provide width for the Tottenham attack. Unlike previous matches, he played all 90 minutes with terrific energy. That’s what gets him the 7.5 rating for the match.
