Top World Cup Winners All-Time: Number Eleven – Italy, 2006

The 2006 World Cup saw many teams establish themselves in the Group Stages. Host nation Germany, Argentina, Brazil and Spain all came out of the groups looking like they were ready to take home the cup.

Italy, however, played a very defensive style that kept them in it and kept them hanging around. They wound up winning their group and in the knockout stages, were blessed with a fairly easy route to the final.

Having only to topple Australia and Ukraine, the Italians took Germany into extra time in the semis and rode the final against France into penalties, where they finally celebrated as their defensive dominance took home the win.

France may have been the better club in the final, but it was not in Italy’s style this World Cup to look completely dominant. Their defense was stalwart as they surrendered just two goals in the entire competition. Hard to argue with how far that got them.
