Top World Cup Winners All-Time: Number Ten – England, 1966

That one, glorious year where England finally lived up to their expectations. It feels like every year the Three Lions expect to win everything and every year, but either something goes horribly wrong, or they try to convince themselves that it wasn’t their own shortcomings, but something that went horribly wrong.

Whatever the case, it all worked out in 1966. England beat an ever-powerful West German side by a score of 4-2. If there is one thing that Germany has always been characterized by, it is their composition in the defensive end of the game.

So it goes without saying that England controlled the game, as they pounded home four goals, which accounted for 67% of the goals that West Germany surrendered the entire competition.

While it took into extra time to grind out the win, in the end, the English did indeed outlast the German’s in the war of attrition in a display of true grit and determination.
