Top World Cup Winners All-Time: Number Seven – Italy, 1982

Hosted in Spain, the 1982 World Cup saw their host struggle out of the box and quickly establish that it would be a borderline miracle for them to bring home a title. In the stead of the Spanish collapse, Brazil came out and showed that they had to be considered the favorites, especially with Italy failing even to win their group, with Poland taking first.

Still, this is Italy’s strongest World Cup team, yet they did not have the easiest run to nab their third World Cup title.

They came on strong when it was needed most, and that is what mattered. In the second group draw, Italy was matched with South American powerhouses Argentina and Brazil. It was Italy who emerged with two wins, winning their way into the semi’s, where they faced the same Polish team that had won their group.

It was a comprehensive 2-0 win for the Italians, who went on to face West Germany, where they yet again showed the world that when it matters most, no one does it better.
