Top World Cup Winners All-Time: Number Six – Argentina, 1986

The only reason why this Argentine squad is not higher up on the list is that it is based on team performance. Regarding top World Cup performances by an individual, the captain of the champions’, Diego Maradona, would be at or very near the top.

Maradona scored the ‘Hand of God’ goal as well as the ‘Goal of the Century’ (two separate goals, mind you). England was helpless to stop either one of them as they were ousted, yet again claiming that they were destined to win it all.

By the end of the tournament, Maradona’s performance would never be forgotten. He was far and away the best player of the tournament, despite not even scoring in the exciting 3-2 final over West Germany.
