Top World Cup Winners All-Time: Number Fourteen – Argentina, 1978

The 1978 edition was certainly the most controversial World Cup. With host nation Argentina having undergone a military coup two years before the Cup, many nations, including the to-be runner-ups Netherlands, wondered if they should even take part in the tournament.

While the field stayed at 16 teams, no one having withdrawn, the controversy was far from over.

In the second round of the group stages, Brazil had a commanding grip on the group and host Argentina had to defeat Peru by a four-goal margin to get to the final. They accomplished this feat, winning 6-0.

Many called foul play, but Peru denied all claims that the Argentine military had intervened and, considering that Peru lost to Brazil 3-0 and Poland 1-0, there is little reason to expect that more was at play here.

Argentina went on to put down the Netherlands in the final to take home their first World Cup.
