Top World Cup Winners All-Time: Number Thirteen – West Germany, 1990

West Germany may have three World Cup titles, but not once have they looked wholly conclusive or overbearing. Germany still exhibits that discipline and forthright style of play, but recently they have looked far more dominant than their West German predecessors.

Still, 1990 was a display of defense. No World Cup has brought about fewer goals per game (2.21) and it played perfectly into West Germany’s hands.

The West Germans dominated their group before going on an impressive streak in the knockout stages to take home the title. They opened up against the Dutch, went on to face the Czechs, then the English and finally, they beat Argentina to win the title.

In a World Cup that was lacking in goals, West Germany scored the most, slotting home 15 goals, five more than the next highest tally. It would be the last title for a split Germany, but it was by far the most convincing.
