Tottenham player ratings: Weak 1-1 draw with West Brom
Victor Wanyama-7
It was a pretty easy match for the Kenyan midfielder. He effectively broke up the West Brom attack when he needed to, but he wasn’t troubled all that often.
The one knock on his game is that he really doesn’t provide you much going forward. Against most opponents, that weakness isn’t all that pronounced. When dominating possession like Spurs did today, it’s pretty noticeable. It was a fine performance, but nothing special.
Jan Vertonghen-7
Aside from a very clumsy challenge to earn his yellow card, Vertonghen was pretty solid on the day. Like a lot of his teammates, he didn’t do anything spectacular, nor did he make any giant mistake.
If there’s any criticism to be made, Vertonghen should be able to handle set pieces better than he does. Tottenham did struggle against several of West Brom’s corners.
Toby Alderweireld-6.5
It wasn’t the Belgian’s best day on the pitch even before his injury. He started the match pretty brightly with some well-placed diagonals, but he faded quickly. I hoped he’d make some progress helping the Tottenham attack, and that never materialized on the afternoon.
Hugo Lloris-6
The French captain didn’t have a lot to do on the afternoon. Chadli’s goal was a result of a rebound, but it was an outstanding save from Lloris to stop the initial shot. You certainly can’t say he was at fault for the goal. It was a very average performance on the day.
