AS Roma: Three hopes, one fear
By Sean Maslin
Will AS Roma send Francesco Totti out a winner?
It has been a long, crazy journey for Francesco Totti and AS Roma. Consider this: when Totti first entered the Stadio Olimpico as a professional twenty-three years ago many of you reading this were not even born. Twitter did not exist, heck even America Online did not exist. Silvio Berlusconi was still a prominent figure in Italy, but the current Prime Minister of Italy, Matteo Renzi, was just 21 years old!
While it would be easy for Roma to turn the season into a celebration of Totti for all that he has done the club has higher aspirations. Although they were unable to get back into the Champions League this campaign (losing to FC Porto in the playoff round saw to the end of that) the club will be contending for the Serie A title this season.
So can they claim their first title since 2000-2001? Much of it will depend upon their attacking pieces. With Mohamed Salah and Stephan El Shaarawy back full-time for The Yellow and Reds expectations are high at Rome that they can finally unseat Juventus. But the fear is that they have not done on enough to rebuild their defense to make a sustained run at the title.
So with that in mind let’s look at the three hopes and one fear of AS Roma.
