Tottenham can have no complaints about their loss at Liverpool

Some Tottenham fans may have a problem with the weak starting XI Mauricio Pochettino trotted out against Liverpool yesterday. I’m not one of those fans. Spurs lost 2-1 to Liverpool, but got almost everything they wanted out of the match.

Sure, Pochettino would have loved to see his young players win the match, but that was never all that likely. Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp simply selected a stronger squad for the match. In particular, Daniel Sturridge was the difference leading the Reds’ line. The club’s young back four simply couldn’t handle the England international.

Quite simply, Liverpool could afford to put more effort into the EFL Cup match than Spurs. They don’t have European football to deal with. Tottenham have bigger things to worry about. They have to cope with the pressures of Champions League football. That’s not a shot at Liverpool, it’s simply a statement of fact.

The match boiled down to a high-profile experiment for Tottenham’s young players. Read on to discover how each Spurs star performed in the laboratory at Anfield yesterday.
