Squad cohesion

Despite many of the same players from last season’s squad still intact, Jose Mourinho brought several new faces to Old Trafford during the summer transfer period. United have shown flashes of their capabilities, but there are elements of Mourinho’s lineup that will need time to gel.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic began the season in impressive form and leads the club in scoring so far this season with four Premier League goals. But after the hot start, Ibra has struggled in recently and has not scored since a Europa League match last month. His size, strength and technical ability will always find him goals, no matter how Zlatan is lined up. However, as he works more with the new squad and players around him, his numbers are bound to back on the rise.

Anthony Martial is another talented Manchester United player who is adjusting to the new tactics and teammates around him. The Frenchman normally will find himself played out wide instead of centre-forward and is still growing into the position in some ways. Only starting a handful of matches and substitute appearances have limited Martial to a goal and two assists, but production from the 20-year old will improve as he becomes more comfortable.

Eric Bailly’s knee injury, the conundrum of what to do with Wayne Rooney and Paul Pogba adjusting to life again in the Premier League all point to Mourinho and his team needing time to find their groove.
